Design Challenges 2013-2014

The Marshmallow Challenge

Students were challenged to create the tallest freestanding tower out of the following materials:

  • 20 sticks of spaghetti
  • 1 yard of masking tape
  • 1 paper bag
  • 1 marshmallow
The marshmallow had to be at the tallest point of the tower and students only had 18 minutes to complete the task.

Check out some footage from this challenge.

In this challenge, students were introduced to the ideas of critique, revision, and rapid prototyping.

Revamping the Report Card

Students were given the challenge to redesign the report card to meet the needs of their assigned student. Students were given a full profile of a student with diverse, individual needs. They had to draw conclusions about what their student would find most helpful in a report card based on a set of interview questions. Students then had to redesign traditional elements of a report card to be more specific for their student.

Students had some great original ideas that were USER-CENTERED, which was the idea of the challenge. They came up with some awesome end products.
